A lifelong student of the visual and performing arts, Tom McWilliam’s career path
right after college took him to midtown Manhattan and a job at Conde Nast.
After five years as a picture editor at House & Garden magazine, under creative directors
Ruth Ansel and Lloyd Ziff and ending with one impressionable year with Anna Wintour
as Editor-in-Chief of HG, Tom left publishing to pursue his growing interest in
photography and see how hewould express himself on the other side of the camera.
With a knack for collaboration and problem solving honed during his tenure in publishing,
(and his interest in design, passion for eating and curiousity about nature to guide him)
Tom soon found new paths of visual expression with the camera. For the past 15 years he
has specialized in interior, still life and garden photography. With his mastery of natural
and artificial light gleaned from assisting interior masters like Oberto Gili and Francois Halard,
and fashion photographers Marc Hispard and Mario Testino Tom can present any client with
options to satisfy their creative needs as well as meet their timetables and budgets.
His clients have invited him to places that have taken him all over the world for editorial
projects and national ad campaigns for numerous ad agencies. His voice in photography
has strengthened over the years and his signature “one sun one light” style in his still
work has recently expanded to include video work. In 2009 and again in 2010 his director of
photography work on video shorts have garnered numerous awards at film festivals
across the nation.
Of course none of this would be possible without the support of his family, encouragement
from his friends and wonderful efforts from his professional partners.
